    Scope relief

I have a post-64 Winchester Model 70 in 30-06. Having a terrible time finding a scope mount which will give the proper eye relief for my scope. Would it be reasonable to shorten the stock by an inch to fix the problem? The scope is a Whitetail variable. Would changing to a different scope be a better solution?

    .

Have you tried extended rings to position the scope closer to your eye ?

I have a 1970's vintage, model 70 with a 10 X redfield in two piece conetrol mounts - no problem with scope positioning
Would not cut the stock to correct a scope problem.

I have never discussed rifle length with my gunsmith,, but,,
I bought my wife a Valmet 412 O/U 20 gauge when we got interested in shooting clays,,
I took it back to him, as my wife hated the auto-reset safety,,
WELL, when he found out the gun was for my wife, he talked me into letting him cut the stock to fit her.
(I am WAY taller, so the original length suited me fine)

Well he cut the Valmet,, now, any "normal" height human picks that gun up and can shoot it well, even better than their own shotgun.
I am convinced that some guns, like that Valmet were intended to be cut to fit the owner.

We have probably had that shotgun over 30 years,, I would cut it again with out a single doubt.

    Agreed. Bit drastic solution.

Have not been able to find extension rings for quite some time. You could consider installing a long eye relief scope as used on shotguns or mussleloaders.

Why I usually order from the makers website, if possible.

Ordered a set of extended Weaver scope mounts from eBay. Will see how this works when they come in.

A little late, but keep in mind there several companies that make a one piece picatinny style base. I have done this many times to solve almost any mount scope problem. With the cross slots all along the base you have an infinite option of ring mounting. Check: evolution gun works - I think: egw.com Just remember, once you shorten a stock, it's short. BAD idea you will regret!

Option #2: call up Talley's, tell them the rifle and scope, buy what they tell you.
    803-854-5700 problem solved.

Thats different - cut the stock to fit the shooter for sure - I am short so have cut a few to fit me - my take is fit the gun to the shooter before you even mount the scope - THEN fit the scope and get the eye relief right with the gun correctly/comfortably mounted -----who knows the eye relief problem may go away in the process.
