Cast Boolit mold for a 32-20

Hi:

I recently acquired a Model 1892 Winchester in 32/20caliber and want to cast boolits and reload for it.

Is the Lee 120 RNFP a good choice for this or is the Lee 93 grain better?
Any other recommendationsboth for boolit and powder charge would be appreciated.

I have used the Lee 120 gr 30 cal mold as cast with great success in the 32-20. Mine throws a bullet out at about 311 to 312. I also use this bullet with the Lee Liquid Alox. However my 32-20 also slugs at about 311. Whether it would work in a larger bore I do not know. The Lee pistol bullet molds lack a cannelure which in a lever action prevent stove piping so I would try the other mold first. Otherwise the old classic 115 grain mold from Lyman.

I use a pb 3118 type bullet @ 1100fps for a plinker and gc bullet of similar design over 1680 @ 1800fps. I size .314 to match my revolver throats.

It is on the light side for a 32-20, but the RCBS 98 gr. SWC shoots right at 1/2" at 50 yds. from my Marlin 1894 CL. 1,600 Fps. seems about tops in my gun with this plain base boolit, but the bore isn't exceptionally smooth either.

since Lyman doesn't make the 311316 mould anymore, I would get the NOE 314 115gr mould, GC or PB . very happy with NOE.

I have the Lee mould and NOE's version of the 3118, the 314008. Lee is fine for plinking over a few grains of pistol powder. The 314008 is great for BP loads, holds plenty of SPG lube.
Awesome little cartridge, easy on the powder & lead and fun to shoot, hope you enjoy it.

I use both of these. I run the 120 through a standard lubrisizer.

NOE or Accurate have multiple designs that will work, but my favorite is the RCBS 32-98 SWC. It casts a little larger than either the 311-316 or the 311-008 that I have, and sized .312 shoots very well out of my Browning 53. 5,0 grains of Unique and I am set.

My Marlin needs a .314 dia boolit so I asked Tom at Accurate to cut me a .315 and it is great in the old girl,,,,,,,

I have an old 3118 with integral handles and no vent lines but it casts a little shy of what I need for this rifle,

One thing for sure, you don't need a gas check. I have a 105 grain mould from Accurate that works very well in 2 revolvers, a Marlin 94 and a rebored Winchester 92. The rifles want a .314-.315 bullet so that is what I ordered and that is what I got in all 4 cavities. I do have to run them through a .311 sizer for a Colt Army Special and an Uberti SAA. The rifles give 1650 and the revolvers 1175-1225 with no leading.

Last month I worked up a loading for a friend's Winchester '92 in 3220. The various molds I tried for this project were:

RCBS 313-98-SWC, weighs 100 gr, sized .313";
Ideal 311-33 (HP version of the 311008), weighs 100 gr., sized .311";
Lyman 311361 GC, weighs 115 gr, sized .311";
Winchester 311008 pattern (old mold), weighs 115 gr., sized .313".

The RCBS boolits scattered and gave horrible groups. The 31133 groups were slightly smaller, nothing to look forward to there. The 311316 were close to what the rifle wanted, but had consistent (and irritating) fliers with each group. The Winchester mold was the ticket. This is an early mold, no wood insulators on the metal handles. I got around this by installing a pair of Lee replacement handles on the mold. I kept the blocks closed, pushed the handles on the mold as far as they would go easily, then seated them with a wood mallet (placed the closed block end securely on the concrete floor, then applied impacts to the handles to drive them home). The Winchester casting measure .312 from the mold so I used a .313" sizer to keep them fat. His rifle preferred a charge of 10.0 #2400 after trying various powders and charge weights. I got the sights regulated to this load easily. Alloy was ACCOWW lubed with LAR45's BAC.

It has been my experience that any 32/20 firearm can be very demanding in the loading is likes. Actually they seem to hate more combinations than they like. Don't be surprised if you have to experiment with many different powders (at various loading levels) and bullet designs (assorted by design, weight, alloy and sized diameter). Frustrating to say the least, but at least this is a reason to stay on the range. That can't be a bad thing.

If you are referring to the Lee 90 gr. semi wadcutter, a lot of guys swear by it for plinker loads out of the M336. It drops at about .314-.315". Doesn't take a g.chek. I size to .311 and have good luck out to 50 yards in my 30WCFs. After that, groups go south.

I have one of the lyman 311316 I ordered it hp to use in my .30 carbine Blackhawk. it works good in my 92 and 73.

Choosing a mould will not be nearly as difficult as finding brass. I like the 311008 from NOE. I have both the GC and PB.

Sorry for the late response, I didn't see this.. Anyways, 4.5 grains of Herco to 6.5 grains of Herco held the 1/2" mark, as did 5.0 grains of Power Pistol. 5.0 grains of Unique did as well per my loading notes. All loads are 1,600 fps. or less.
