Collar buttons, Too much lube?

I was out shooting some collar button boolits today, getting pretty good results out to 50 yards, chrono about 880 fps. out of Marlin 45/70 LTDIII. Chrono set about 15 feet from muzzle. When I was taking the chrono down, I noticed some spatters of boolit lube on the chrono. I have been using Felix lube on these boolits, and those of you who are familiar with this boolit, it holds a HUGE amount of lube. ( you can nearly check the lube on these things with a dipstick lol)
Would I get better results by tumble lubing these boolits? I am buying these boolits unlubed. I'm thinking accuracy may be improved by not having so much lube on them. (and they empty a lubesizer in short order)

At the low speeds these are traveling, I might be able to get away with tumbling with Lee liquid mixed with some JPW and mineral spirits?,and they may perform even better without having large clods of boolit lube flying off them as they leave the muzzle

That bullet was designed when they only shot black powder but you are right they do hold a lot of lube.

soft lubes do that.
some guy's prefer soft so it flies off like that.
others prefer a harder lube that stays put

Those boolits are strange looking anyway, and in the day, I suppose you had to have rather healthy chickens if you wanted to shoot many collar buttons...
They are fun,though,and certainly plenty to dispatch the occasional varmint around the house here.

While we are on this subject of Collar Buttons.....I bought several bags of them from a local gun shop for my 45-70.
Are you guys using any case fillers with your loads or just filling the case with slow powders ?
What about crimping ? Are you rolling a slight crimp over the case mouth ?

Just wondering, I haven't had too good of luck with my loads so far. I'll have to look in my note book and see what I used for powder charge, it's been a few years...

I'm in the dark here! What the "H" is a collar Button boolit? I've been in this game for over 35 years and have never heard the term Collar Button, except on a nice shirt. Would someone please turn the light on. Maybe I know them as someting else.

The collar button is a rather light conical boolit. It's .458 diameter if I recall correctly.

Lyman 457130 and it casts to 140 gr or so.

If you think a collar button holds a lot of lube, try a T/C Maxi Ball in .45 Cal for that .45-70.

More by dumb luck then smarts I found this : I got some of these bullets from Western Bullet Co and they are greased.
I have only fired one bullet so far loaded with TB. The bullet was set into the case just deep enough to cover the grease groove. What sort of powder and weight are you using??

I've been using from 10 to 12 grains Unique, and between 5 and 6.5 gr. Bullseye. I've tried both with and without a tuft of poly filler and couldn't tell much difference, so I'll probably not use any filler in future loads, as this is a "fun" load for plinking and maybe small game or an occasional varmint around the house here. The loads are grouping between 1 and 2 inches out of my Marlin 1895LTDIII and Cowboy models at 50 yards. Plenty good enough for what i want them for, and I'll load these on my Dillon 550.
