I have a ruptured shell extractor that I can't identify. Looks to be about right for a 308 but instead of a rim for the bolt to catch it is attached to a lever. The lever is about 6" long. I have tried to do a search but found nothing.

from the fairly vague description it could be for a 1919 belt fed

and depending on the day I might just step over that line !!!
I understand but I don't do pictures. The extractor looks like a normal RSP but is pinned to let it swivel. It's too short for a 30-06, closer to a 308.
It could be a cobbled together one for a .308, using GI parts.
I remember having one similar to what you describe but in 06 length, in one of the shore station armories I had (decades after the Navy quit using .30 cal Browning's). From what I remember, everything had the same threads so making a shorter one was easy.

I don't think it is cobbled together, is had a part # stamped in the handle. It is well made and looks military. It is made to prize a stuck shell out of the chamber. Maybe part of a machine gun service kit.
Maybe cobbled together was a poor choice of words on my part.
I do not remember the numbers stamped on the one we had, but the rod and outside gripping collet parts readily interchanged with the same parts from one in a case extractor meant for a 7.62, either for an M-60 or M-14.
Funny the things armorers will try to combine just to see if they will work.
I have personally never seen a completely separated case in a GI weapon; either belt or magazine fed, so it was kind of a moot point just to occupy my time.
Robert
Maybe you have solved the mystery. I have a 30-06 case extractor, I can remove the 7.62 parts and the 06 parts screw right in.
Thanks
Dave
Edit, I searched for ruptured shell extractor for Browning 1919 and found it. Looks like it could be used to remove a ruptured case on barrel that wasn't mounted in the receiver. The Israeli's made one for the 1919 in 7.62 X 51, that's what I have, the part #'s are the same.

Would be interesting to see a picture of one.
I looked on the web, but couldn't find anything.
What is the part number????
Ruptured shell extractor for browning 1919, should show a link.
I see.
I've seen those before.
I think I might have had one at one time.
Never knew what it was for.
Now I know.
Interesting.
