The 44 Russian appears to be a perfect fit.
I have one that looks like that. Inherited from my Grandfather. .38 S&W caliber, 3" barrel. Originally nickel plated but in similar condition. It's marked 'Bulldog'. My understanding is that many were made in the early 20th century for shop keepers which my Grandfather was. They were made rough and sold cheap. The notches in the cylinder are the same as yours. Because of them the cylinder does not align well with the barrel so I have never fired it.

have one of those, it fires a 44 Webley round neat gun to reload for and shoot
