For Freedom Arms 83 454 Casull

Will this mould from Accurate work in FA 83? I’m going to try to do some throat measurements with pin gauges but don’t want to but only to find it won’t chamber. Any other of Tom’s heavy 45’s you would suggest?

The critical dimension is the length from crimp groove to nose. If the nose of the bullet sticks out of the chamber the cylinder will not revolve. If it is too short you are wasting powder space. Subtract the length of a case from the length of your cylinder. Subtract 0.020" from the number you get. Ask Tom at Accurate Molds to set your crimp groove this far from the end of the bullet.

I found 280 - 320 gr to be the best range of bullet weights for my Freedom Arms Model 83. This bullet is too heavy for my taste, but to each his own.

You need enough weight to get good ignition with the slow burning powders, such as H110 and Accurate #9. Too much weight limits velocity and therefore range. Somewhere in between is ideal.

To get best accuracy you should slug your chamber throats and have LatheSmith make a custom bullet sizing die for you. Finished bullets should be 0.001" under throat diameter. Learn how to make an accurate throat diameter measurement. Use soft lead slugs and a micrometer. Do not use calipers; calipers will not return an accurate measurement at this level of precision, regardless of manufacturer claims.

The cylinder of my M83 454 Casull is 1.785 inches long OAL.
I shot an LBT LFNGC 340 gr mainly as my go to bullet. But I had 360 WFN (wont stabilize well at lower velocity) plus a 410 LFN and 415 WLN too. Both too heavy for 1-24 twist.
The Encore 454 Casull 12 inch barrel I have will stabilize a 515 grain sized down .45/70 bullet just fine in its 1-16 twist.
Besides the bullet you showed say for 454 Casull on Accurates site.

Had a friend with a Casull. Use to load him RCBS 45-325-FN-U sized down to .454". This was made for a rifle and drops at around 337 grains. I HP'd the monster and it dropped down to around 321. He was very happy with it after the HPing. PB design. Might look at that. Run some in my .45 Colt occasionally when I'm in a mood for punishment./beagle
