Small ring K98

Ok so I have a Mauser K98 small ring that was sporterized when I got it. The problem is there is a nice chunk of the stock that has chipped out and I’d like to put it in a new stock... now normally I would just buy a small ring stock but everything else on this rifle is the same as a large ring... would I be better off getting a large ring stock and bedding it in?

I believe Richards stocks can cut that stock for you.

the trigger guard may be different. You need a stock with the screw holes in the right place, and you might end up using glass and sawdust filling in the gaps. I have converted a lot of stocks to a rifle they were not intended to fit, with the glass and sawdust, and a chisel.

Definitely do not buy a large ring stock, there will be a horrendous gap at the left front of the action if you do. I too have one of those Kar 98a or az rifles. Mine was built into a fairly light .30-06 a very long time ago.

The story I got when I bought it in 1988 for $189.00 was that a WWI vet had brought in his collection to sell. It had stood in a gun cabinet so long the Pachmyr pad had crushed. It now has a decelerator on it and is my most dependable rifle.

I've always kind of regretted not also buying the .300H&H, but at the time I thought about reaming it to .300 Weatherby and it would have been entirely too light for that round.

I wish I knew who did the work, it has a delightful 34 ounce two stage trigger.
