Mold Temperatrue probe & hole placement

Have been reading that some bullet casters drill a hole in their mold to allow a temperature probe to enter. I have a thermometer that came with an LP gas turkey fryer that I wonder if it would work. Do any of you follow this practice with preheating your molds and checking the temperature with a probe? If so where and how deep do they drill the access hole for the probe? I don't want to ruin a mold.

Take a look at NOE molds. They offer drilling there molds at time of purchase. I think part is how many cavities your mold has and how deep you draw it. I have bought 2 from NOE that have been drilled. Plan on trying them as soon as weather clears off here.

Don't know how the guys that know what they're doing do it but have drilled a couple of mine and they work. With my setup it was drilled into the side of the mould so I could leave the TC while casting. It's roughly 1/4" from the front and the pix has a white q-tip in the 1/8" hole that's about 1/2" deep. Tapped a set screw in the front to secure the TC. Just seemed to me you just need to place the hole/holes where they don't interfere with the cavity. Also did a Lee DC with similar success.
