    Hornady Seating Stem

Quick question for all of you who use Hornady New Dimension dies.
In several of my pistol caliber dies I have an extra flat headed seating stem for use with cast bullets. I sent a message to Hornady detailing the issue I was having with my 25-35 Winchester dies where they were leaving a ring on the nose of the bullet. I inquired whether they had a 25 caliber flat headed seating stem available for purchase or for custom order and they replied they did not. They did say they would discuss it in their product meetings though.
So is there a source for rifle caliber seating stems anyone knows of? Does not seem like too complicated a piece of equipment to make but I am not a machinist in any sense of the word.

Fill the seating stem with epoxy.

Thought about it but want to keep it available for jacketed. I may have to put in the epoxy and buy a new standard one for the jacketed.

Checked this out some more and have come to the conclusion that molding the head of the bullet into hot glue or epoxy is fine if I use the same bullet all the time.
Unfortunately I have a boatload of different cast bullets I want to try and the stem does not fit any of them, even the 117 gr. Hornady jacketed round nose bullets. What I need is a flat headed one like they have in their pistol caliber die sets. Have read where people are selling custom seater stems but had no luck so far finding anything yet. The search continues.

I made one a flat stem. Filled it with epoxy and stand it on a flat surface. If the bullet has any kind of flat nose, i.e., truncated nose, swc, lfn, wfn, etc., it works very well. The other pistol seater I have is for round nose bullets.

    r1kk1,

What kind of epoxy did you use and how did you prep the seating stem?

Degrease seating stem like brake cleaner and use whatever epoxy you choose like jb weld, etc or use hot glue. Let it set for 24 hours before using.

I've done bullet seaters like this on a couple of Dillon stems too.

I have a Lyman lubrisizer and the generic flat nose punch rests in the machine 99% of the time, I just have different caliber flat nose punches.

Appreciate the info. I am going to order an extra stem and make it a flat head and see how it works out.

Anytime you need something custom, talk to Ben at Hornady.

    Take care
