.243 cast pet load help.

I have a new rifle, assembled parts, and need a start point for loads, any help would be appreciated. Picking up a 100 gr mold from fellow site member.

The only .243Win. mold I have is Lyman's 87gr. Loverin (#245496), which I size to .244". I generally use 14grs. WC 820, 14grs. H/IMR 4198, 14grs. AA 5744. IMR 4227 works too, but it is dirtier than the others. Also, don't even think about trying the very slow milsurp powders, WC 860, WC 872, or IMR 5010 in this cartridge under any circumstances. They're not dangerous, but unbelievably inefficient, i.e., filthy, in this cartridge.

NSP64-----I have the 95 grain RCBS mold. I have a 1967 Lyman manual that lists a starting load of 13.0 grains with a max of 18.0 grains of IMR 4227. Fast forward a few years to 1980 and the Lyman Cast Bullet manual has a starting load of 19.3 to a max of 24.5 same bullet same powder and the newer start is higher than the old max. I started with the old start of 13.0 and worked up in 1/2 grain increments. Results so so until I got to 23.5 and it was magic. Never saw such a drastic change with just a half grain increase but 24.0 was off the paper. Another mystery about this was the velocity. The book says 24.5 should give 2456fps. I used a guys chronie that all other loads were about where they should be. The owner said it was spot on with all his loads. But the chronie said 2900fps with the 23.5 load???????? Dep Al has had good results with that same bullet and maybe he will post his results?

I just got back from the range.

The RCBS 95 grainer with 19 grains of H-4198 (water dropped, sized .244 and Lars carnauba red lube shot well at 50 yds and the cool thing about it is that the point of impact is exactly the same as with 2-J word loads I have. One is the 70 gr. Blitz-King with 37.5 gr. H-4895 and the other is the 100 gr. Hornady Spire Point with 44 gr. IMR 7828. The rifle is a Parker Hale.

I just bought the RCBS 95 grain variant. Still sitting in the grease on my bench. If that danged fly rod would quit sticking to my hand, I'd give her a go myself. I've got a Ruger 77 that shoots really good with those orange bullets. Really good for fifteen or twenty rounds that is. Then there's enough copper in the barrel to make me worry that a meth head will steal the gun just for the scrap copper. My initial thoughts were to paper patch it, that away I can still get some pretty nice velocity and hopefully there's nothing to be left behind in the bore. I'm gonna run the boolits through a Lee push through at .243 then finish them off in my Lubrisizer at .244. I had initially planned on going the standard route with just the lube and gas check, but I can't seem to lay my hands on any 6MM gas checks. Midsouth didn't even list them from either Hornady or Lyman. Are they dropping that caliber from production? My next step was to give Larry a call and see if he's got any Gators on hand. Which I, like most everyone else, much prefer anyway. Keep me posted on your progress.
