1st Time with a Hollow Point mold, Mihec MP HG68-185

Thanks to btreanor, I got this spiffy brass mold that arrived in the mail today. An unused Mihec MP HG68-185 (4 Cavity). I really thought this would be harder, or at least trickyer, but, no biggie.

And I have to say, this is my first brass mold.. They're heavy. But oh my god is the quality of manufacture fantastic. Given the chance on a group buy, I'd buy another one of his molds in a heartbeat.

You're killing me here. I've been waiting on a group buy Mihec mould (brass with Cramer type hollow points) for over 16 months now. Last I heard, it will be made in January. Oh well, I still believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy too!

I just lucked out on this. btreanor was selling some stuff so I bought this (unused) off him and an NOE 269-145gr FN 4 cavity for my swedish mauser.

These are excellent bullets that flat out chew holes in paper. I use 3.8gr of bullseye for the solid point & 4.0gr for the hp.

I haven't run them faster than target velocities (775fps), this is all the further I got with test loads & quit after the 1st day of testing & the 2nd load I tried.

I have that mold and it is a Dandy. One of these days, I need to sit down and compare the casting rate between it (the HP version) and the non-HP MP mold. I bought both, one, (the HP) sized .452 and one sized .454 for my 45 colts. Comparing my MP 432-640 HP with a 4 cavity Lyman 429-421 resulted in about 5 HP's to every 6 Solids cast, but the Lyman is a smidge lighter. I ought to do a side by side comparison between the two MP molds. I have 5 of his molds, 4 4-cavity, and one 2 cavity. You can pay more, but you can't buy better. It is a toss up between Miha Previc and Tom over at Accurate as to who makes the sweeter molds. I've both and can't choose between 'em.

Is it a 200 gr Solid and 185 gr hollowpoint? Can you cast solids and hollowpoints with the same mould?

I have borrowed a few and they are the very highest point of machining, very impressive unlike my scrap metal molds.
They are heavy and need mold heat kept up but work like a charm once in the groove.

Yes, and yes. But I would recommend a set of plug pins w/ it. The hollowpoint pins flip over but protrude from the bottom of the mold. The plug pins allow you to cast solids w/ nothing protruding from the bottom of the mold. I have a solid only version of this mold and it rains bullets when up to casting temp.

Yeah, I'm thinking the solid version is the way to go. I cast the majority of my 45 ACP bullets hard as wood pecker lips and would like to cast these with linotype. I am just interested if the hollow point aids accuracy by moving the COG to the rear. Although the amount of tin in lino may cause an issue in a brass mould.

Hey, I was just using that mold a little while ago:



I did find if you ever have them stick to the pins it's pretty easy to pull that pin and polish it. Unscrew the rod from the side, chuck the pin in the drill, and polish it as it spins. Easy peasy and no more sticky.

Someone must be made of money. Using uber expensive Linotype for 45 bullets

Tinning isn't something I'd be to concerned about. While it can happen it's easily removed. Fix it early and you won't have a lot of buildup.

I've been saving the same 65 lbs of linotype for 5 years now, haven't used it yet, so might as well use it to cast some very well filled out H&G 68 boolits. They'll be hard like my gun wants, super shiny, well filled out, and possibly help me stop getting the beat down at the 25 and 50 yd lines.
