Savage 99 .250-3000 molds?

So I've been kicking around the idea of getting a mold and trying in this rifle. I've learned the hard way what long j-words do in a 14"-1 twist. Was curious what molds others may have used successfully in this rifle? Seems the projectile length is more important than the weight, and in this twist .850" or around there is best.

NOE has a sale on .258/.260 calibers, trying to figure out what one may work best?

Yes projectile length is important. At cast bullet speeds in the 1-14" twist the bullet length needs to be even shorter than jacketed because of the reduction of projectile RPM's. In my 99 (1-14") I use the NOE .260" 80gr. RF (RD) that when gas checked has an OAL of .645" or so. I experimented with a number of molds starting with a 100gr. .840" length. It wasn't until I was using a .720" length bullet that I starting getting groups and once under .700" things got way better.

and wouldn't you know it that one is sold out. But the 260 89gr is in stock with a length of .660" so guess I may be in luck.

Yeah, I think .750" length is closer to the "magic number" if I recall my experimentation in the dim dark past of a couple years ago. I'll check my notes when I get home and re-post if I'm off base.

^^^That's the number that seems to be the magic one in my .250-300. For cast, I use the Lyman 258-463, which is supposed to run @ 73 grains but mine was closer to 80 grains, IIRC. I don't shoot it that often anymore, since moving to Huntington Beach, I don't get to the Rifle Range much.

Does anyone happen to know, what is the Rifling twist rate understood to be in the SAVAGE model 1920, in 250 3000?

Vis a vie the Savage model 1899?

Great thread. At some point in time I believe the twist rate changed in Savage 99's in 25-3000. Anyone have an idea what year that might be?

twist changed to 1-10" when the 99 went to tang safety 1961ish
