My new Rossi should be in in a couple days. I about cryed buying j - bullets for it yesterday. Anyway it'll spend it's life shooting tin cans and maybe I'll save some j- bullets for hunting. What Lee mold is recommended

well, the Lee C430-310-RF is probably the best bet from Lee, but from my experience it'll cast a tad small for the Rossi's typically large bore and cause lead fouling.

I'd strongly suggest NOE copy of the Ranch Dog 265gr. RF for the Rossi levergun.

I use a Lee 429-240-2R (240gr LRN) in my Rossi, and it works pretty well. The accuracy is good and it feeds well.
From what I have read on the C430-310-RF mold they are not created equal. Some drop really small some drop .432" depending on alloy used.
Got a .22 .30 .32 .357 .38 .40 .41 .44 .45 .480 or .500 S&W cylinder that needs throats honed? 9mm, 10mm/40S&W, 45 ACP pistol barrel that won't "plunk" your handloads? 480 Ruger or 475 Linebaugh cylinder that needs the "step" reamed to 6° 30min chamfer? I would also second the recommendation for the NOE copy of the Ranch Dog 265 gr. RNFP. I have that mold in the original Ranch Dog and it was the most accurate cast boolit in my Marlin 1894. I sized it to .432 to fit my Marlin's .431 groove dia. That weight is perfect for good stopping power on deer size game and light enough for a flat shooting round. Loaded down it also makes a very good plinking-target boolit Ranch Dog designed that bullet for lever action rifles and it fed very smoothly in the Marlin 1894.
For light plinking loads (1000 fps or so), I get good results out of the Lee 200 grain round nose flat point cast out of ACWW and lubed with 45-45-10. Not sure what size they drop.
I had plinking in mind. I can load jacketed for hunting if need be.I'm planning on hunting with my raging bull with cast fora couple years anyway. I was thinking something light to conserve my lead as long as it feeds well. And kills pop cans
I use the Lee 240 grain TL mold and it does the job. My barrel slugged at .432 the lee mold cast at .4325 and had no leading issues. I load .434 for my higher velocity loads. Love this gun very accurate only shot cast out of it.
Agreed. This guy spits them out in a hurry and it feeds slick in my levers.

The Lee 210RNFP bullet is great if you're just using it for plinking.
I only had plinking in mind. I have several guns and lots of time for hunting
For plinking in the .44 mag in both Marlin 1894's and Winchester 1894's, I've had good success with the Lee 44-200RNFP.
It's all chicken, even the beak!
My Puma won't feed SWC in Magnum brass. I found that both Ranch Dog's .44, 240 gr. and 265 gr. RNFP molds work great. Also, before you shoot any lead in your Rossi, slug the barrel. Mine measured .432"+ and shoots well with .433" bullets. I prefer bullets in the 240-265 gr range so I haven't tried 310 or 200 gr. bullets, but the 240 Lee T/L would be pretty good for a new caster (I got this bullet to feed in my Puma, but my notes are in my Reloading Den [shed] and off hand I don't remember if I just shortened the magnum brass, seated the bullets deep, or just used Special brass...).
My Anchor is holding fast!
Just for some perspective, I shot one of my domestic sheep with this "plinking" load at 40-50 yards. He was eating grass facing me head on, the boolit entered his neck right behind his head broke his spine, traveled the full length of his neck and exited his chest through the sternum, for a total of around 18 inches of penetration. I would not hesitate to take a broadside double lung shot on a deer with this "plinking" load.
