    Ace Hardware .014 Amerimax Aluminum

I ordered some more Amerimax Aluminum today from (at my local) Ace Hardware.

Thickness is .014 that has consistently produced one-holers with my dies by many of my customers and makes great gas checks for gas check shank molds.

Ace Hardware order number is #58102.

    Amerimax number is #68104.

    4" x 50' roll at $16.99.

    My projected count is 9600

    Pat,
    .
I bought a roll of that for $18 and change out the door. I can get 8 discs per one 4" strip 1/2" wide that fit an 8mm gas checker.
I did the math: 16 checks per inch, 12 inches per foot, 50 feet per roll.
    .
16 x 12 x 50 = 9600 gas checks in the roll, assuming no mistakes. There was a few unevenly cupped discs: Learning curve.
    .
So, $18/9600 comes to 0.001875 per unit. (That's less than two tenths of a penny per check!) The Checkmaker™ will pay for itself in no time!

That's the stuff I use. I've got a RD311165 mold that the GC shank seems to be just a couple of frog hairs too big, sometimes you can't quite push the chek on by hand. I just stand the boolit on its nose and give the chek a couple taps with a wee little ball pein hammer, I can feel the chek seat on the base of the boolit, then size, the cheks never come off, that's for sure. Anyone know where to get 0.017 size aluminum? I would like to keep from having to order it and pay for shipping.

A question to the users of this Amerimax 68104. Are you using this as is, or does it need to be annealed?

    thanks, Shaune

I had to anneal for my rifle.

That's some gas check value there Uber7mm...!

I have not had to anneal this .014 Amerimax so far. Maybe some rolls are harder than others. I love the stuff.

I have used the checks annealed and "as-formed". Can't say that I observed any difference yet. My mind is still open. GW

FYI Amerimax Aluminum, talked with East Coast distributer and asked why is the thicknesses of Amerimax, Champion etc all over the place. He says the mills in Florida reserve the cull rolls for flashing. If you are working with FCII and FCIII style gas check makers this can cause a lot of trouble with jambs. You can buy certified metals from Yonky or Cut to Fit. I not sure if you would be affected with thickness problems in Pats tools. James

Nope- no jams with my dies, and very forgiving concerning thickness.

Over hard tempering is a problem if the metal is tempered hard as a rock.

I to date have not had a problem with the ACE #58102 .014 aluminum.

Now- I have a roll of some ACE thinner stuff here- about .008-.009 and it's hard as a rock. To dang hard to form good gas checks as is. It's brass colored on one side. It's going on my roof.

Once in awhile I will get a customer frustrated with making gas checks and it's always a type of metal that is just not suited for the job. Part of making your own checks is finding the right material for your needs. You are manufacturing your own product, after all.

I have shot a complete roll of the Amerimax 0.014" stuff through my .30/30's. Worked good in my CheckMaker. I am now using some of Yonky's coil and I like the coil much better.
