Mosin Nagat first time gunsmithing & face lift

It is a 1953 "Tula" Mosin Nagat. I wanted something cheap in case i messed it up and i wanted something i could take striving steps at making more accurate. First things first was getting rid of the cosmoline, and the nasty flaking finish and adding some color to the wood. so i stripped it, stained it and added several coats of lacquer (probably not my best choice but it's what i had). I then polished and clear coated the but plate, sling slots and barrel rings. Now for the entry level gun smithing, milled off the old bolt knob and added the turn down SS knob. Installed the new rail and scope. Messed with with the trigger but i'll be better off with a new one someday down the road. I then glass bedded the receiver and then attempted to hone the inside of the wood that wraps the barrel and the portion of the stock where the barrel rests while adding two layers of tape to aid in free floating before glass bedding the rear of the barrel. I also pried the clamps that hold the wood wrapped barrel a tad loose so the wood does not affect anything.

With some time at the reloading bench i managed a 3 shot group of .74" at 100 yards.

All in process photos were lost due to Apple Iphone deciding it was time to go.

looks great. The nice thing about working with a gun that is a little homely looking, there is only one way to go and that is for the better! Ready to do it again? And the sickness begins!

You did a really nice job. The quality of the work can be seen both in the rifle and in the shooting! Great group!
