    Oregon Trail Laser Cast Boolits

I have a box of these in .427 dia that Oregon trail advertises for the 44-40 I have no use for. Trying to weigh my options. I could melt them down and recast them into something I can use or I could list them for sale in the Swappin & Sellin forum.

Has anyone here recast this type of boolit from Oregon Trail?

What would you do with these boolits?

I'd either sell or trade them for something I could use..

I would see if someone local could use them so I wouldn't have to ship them. If not, they would be recast into something I could use.

I would sell at a reduced list cost. You can purchase alloy from Roto metals and cast your own cheaper than buying as cast boolits IF you already have the casting equipment to do so. Alloy is usually Lyman #2 (15 bhn). How much does this box of boolits weigh?

Yeah, a buck-fifty per pound shipped (seems to be the going rate for alloyed lead here) might not be the finest recovery on your investment.

But if you could live with that price, I just might buy 'em from you. Getting an itch to top off the lead stack.

You are better off selling them. Laser Cast are a good bullet. I used thousands of them when I was working and had no time to cast.

How does the laser work in casting those bullets, is the laser used to melt the lead and keep it at a constant temp.?

The box weighs just under 15lbs. it has 500, 200gr .427 dia. boolits in it for the 44-40. Some of the lube has started to fall out of the grove on probably half of them. They may fit in a SFRB if I repackage them for shipping.

I just throw a few in here and there in my casting pot and stir the melted wax lube around when it floats to the top.
    it doesn't hurt anything.

Yep - I recast them myself. I had a few hundred that just wouldn't shoot worth a durn in my Marlin.
Lead is lead and they do use a good alloy. I think it's actually a little harder than #2.

Lazer is a marketing name, none really involved. I recast 400 30-30 of them as they didn't fit my 336. Sell if you can find a local buyer. Yes, it is a good alloy, you could cut it with some pure, I did 50/50 and it worked fine. Close to COWW and heat treatable. You have ~ $40 of alloy @ Roto prices.
    Whatever!

Thanks for all your input. I think I'll hang onto them and recast or use them to sweeten the pot later on.
