Bore Gage In Lieu of Slugging Cylinder Throats?

Bought a new revolver and was thinking of using a bore gave & micrometer to measure the cylinder throats instead of slugging them. Can't seem to find my soft lead slugs to push into the throats. Has anyone done this effectively? Anything I should do differently from measuring any other bores?

Depending on the type of bore gage you are referring to it may well be just as accurate as slugging and measuring the slug. If you are using a set of small hole gages and a mike that reads to 0.0001 you can easily get within +/- 0.0003 of the exact size with the proper technique.

Most folks don't have a set of bore gages so they slug and use an outside mike, but its not the only way to do it.

Gages work very well, I use them myself. The only drawback is that it won't tell you about any out of round throats but they would have to be way out of round before it really hurt anything.

I have never used a snap gauge and mic to measure revolver throats, but have slugged them and used pin gauges.
