Did sort of the same thing with a sizing die but not near as bad as you. Put a hole in my mail and finger but much smaller. It was sore for quite a while.

Sorry about your finger! I nearly got it in a single stage press fooling with extra long cases & sizing dies threaded way out.
There is a reason OSHA made it mandatory for two palm button press controls. Even so, there were always operators who wanted to get their quota out early..& taped one button down. I remember back in the late 70's, at the start of 2nd. shift..die makers were told to remove persons hand & clean up mess in lower die from just such a practice.

Did the same thing years ago with a MEC 600 jr. Believe me, after you heal up. Caution is one word you will completely understand. Get well soon.

Did a similar thing maybe 30 odd years ago when loading 38 specials with my son sitting on my knee helping Dad load. He pulled the handle down while my finger was still over the case. Still have a 38 size scar on that finger!

I feel for you and wish you a fast recovery.

No need to shy away from progress. The machine can always be made to work more efficiently.

    Wyman,

Maybe some safety controls need to be designed into the system.

Safety Controls like ,Don't look away froma machine in operation.

Don't put fingers ina place that may trap them, Etc...

Don't work with machinery when you are tired.

All good rules, but ifmyou let one slide, then bad things can happen.

I am staying with the star for now, but I am getting the collater. This should keep hands away from any danger area.

I got tired and should have stopped , but did not.

yup, gotta keep your wits about ya and important parts "out the way"....

OUCHIE! Hope that heals right and fast.

I crushed a fingertip in a pneumatic cabinet door press one time, reached for the rubber mallet and stepped on the foot treadle by accident. First door out of about 100 for that job, hadn't got "in the rhythm" yet. There are hazards at both ends of the "tired" spectrum when doing production work with dangerous tools. Just recently I decapped a finger while decapping several thousand .45 ACP range pickups, somehow my arm got out of time with the one operating the press handle and didn't pull my hand back out of the way after placing a case in the shellholder. We can find ways to hurt ourselves with just about anything when not paying attention, there aren't enough safety shields, PPE, or warning stickers in the universe to protect us from that occasional mind wander. Sooner or later, we humans are bound to have accidents.

Familarity breeds contempt. You would not believe the number of shop teachers missing digits.

Yes I would. And yet these same teachers always had a student do the same thing. Of course they have eliminated all shop classes in middle and high schools because of the law suite happy society

It's good to hear they haven't been eliminated in Texas. They have in Oregon and Washington.
