Rossi 92 357 suggesitons...

Hi -

I picked up another levergun today, this time a Rossi 92 in 357. Supposedly fired 10 times, but there is no way to tell other than it looks brand new in the box.

Since I have a lot more experience with Marlin 336 and 1894, and none with Rossi, I am wondering:
1) what others have found shoots well.
2) if getting the OAL length is as critical as it is with the Marlin.
3) any other hints about this gun.

I am impressed with the smoothness of the action on it.

I've had good accuracy with Lyman 358477 and 358429, both with near max charges of H110. Also 358477 over 2400. I shoot 358429s from mag brass and crimp over the front drive band.

I tried Montana Gold 125 gr JHPs over 20.0 to 21.5 gr H110 and all shot great.

I am going to try out MP-300.

Make sure you check these loads to make sure they are in spec and then work up to them in your rifle--standard disclaimer, etc, etc, but... I have good luck with mine using Lee 158gr RNFP with 7.0grs Unique, or the Lee 158gr SWCGC over 14.0grs 2400, both sized to .358", and using PatMarlins checkmaker to make the gaschecks with the GCd bullets. The Unique load is like shooting a .22 Mag, the 2400 load is a bit more business-like, but still comfortable. Both are accurate enough to consistently shoot clay pidgeons (4") at 100 yds, with the 2400 load giving 1.5-2.5" groups when I do ,my part, and the Unique load doing 2.5-3.75" at 100yds with the issue sights. I think you have a great rifle there.

Some, like myself, have had to loosen the forestock up as it wanted to walk as the barrel heated. I also had to file down the rear sight as it shot high with everything (some buy a higher front sight) I had to loosen a stock up on an old Marlin also. I enjoyed the lighter 38 special loads and used the Lee 158 grain round nose. Sold mine as I got a Marlin 32-20.

I've had one for about 12 years and love it. Mine shoots really well, typically 3 inch groups. I use an RCBS GC 162 in front of 14 gr 2400 and it moves out around 1750 fps. It's fun plinking with 38 158 SWC at about 900fps. I've had the same experience with the sights as northmn. When I first tried the load, it was grouping, but about 6 inches high at 50 yds and about 8 inches high at 100. Kept looking at the sights and wondering if my vision had gone further south. Finally moved the front sight down to about 1/2 way in the rear sight and was fine.

For a light load, the Lee 356-120-TC is top notch with green dot.

The Lee 358-158-RF is awesome for medium loads, I think I use somewhere around 10.5 gr of 2400 (don't quote me on that!)

Oh, and I did need a higher front sight. I just called the manufacturer and then sent me one, gratis. I love the sights, but it's all personal preference.

I put a Steve's Gunz rear peep on mine (replaces the safety on the bolt). I have also run it with a 2x pistol scope mounted. A base runs about $12. The barrel is drilled and tapped for the mount. Two of the screws are under the rear sight.

I recently bought one for Cowboy Action Shooting. I cast a 160 gr. SWC out of an old 4-cavity H&G mould. I load it in .38 cases over 2.6 grs of Clays. Clocks at 835 fps and groups about 1 1/2" @ 50yds.
At first mine fed the .38 loads fine. But after disassembling the rifle and slicking it up, it began jamming by allowing more than one cartridge out of the magazine tube. I piddled with everything in the rifle and finally out of desparation tried seating the bullets just a hair longer so the o.a.l. of the .38's is about .04" shorter than the SAAMI o.a.l. of a .357. So far, so good.
A couple of nights ago, just for pure entertaiment, I grabbed some .38's I had loaded with a Lyman 358429 thinking to myself, "this oughta jam the rifle!". WRONG. For whatever reason, those bullets in a .38 case fed as slick as you-know-what through a goose!
I have read and firmly believe that every one of these rifles is individual with regards to cartridge length and feeding. I have fired a few 357's and while they cycle, they're nearly as easy as .38's. My plan is to shoot all .38's unless I go out for some venison or pork with the little rifle.
Oh, also I used a small square needle file to open the rear sight notch up. The semi-circle was way too small and made it difficult to see a target.

Mine are 2 .357s, and a .45, and now looking for a .44, so at least I'm varying the calibers some. And the ex fell in love with my .357 when I first got it, so my choices were buy her one or watch her take mine, which wasn't going to happen.

i just purchased one with the 20" oct. barrel blue with the case hardend reciever, can't wait to get it. i was wondering if anyone make's a sort of hiviz front sight for these rifles? has anyone tried some sort of sight like this? old eyes have trouble finding targets sometimes any thing that can help seeing the target i'm in for. thanks

thanks for the link!! i'll be able to find what i need on that sight. i also have a rossi 24" oct. in 45colt this is going to help me out, thanks for the help.

i live south of new orleans near the coast between houma and grand isle. been to Opelousas many times, have some friends that live there. i won my first race at Pelstate drag strip in 1966, man! that was a long time ago. i'm getting old.
