Got a Chrony, had some fun

I tripped over an older F-1 Chrony from a handloader friend for a price I couldnt pass up. With the weather as nice as it was today, once the wife got home I had an urge to get some trigger time.

The load is 6.3gr of Unique thrown from my Hornady pistol measure, 357 brass, slinging a Lyman 358156, checked and lubed with BAC. I'm shooting it from my 5" M60.

High: 1061
Low: 1031
Standard Deviation: 11.9

The goal was a light 357 but something that has no business in any 38 or +P. Something that would disuade a curious coon or black bear from any shenanigans while wandering about in the woods this spring and summer. It shot a solid 3" group over 20 rounds SA, and 15 rounds 4.5" DA at 20 yards, which is about the best consistency I've ever shot with a pistol.

I really love the gun, and I think I've found my walkabout load for the spring and summer.

I surely need a chrono. Been threatening for years, but still don't have one.

In a similar vein, I developed a load using the same case and bullet and 7g Unique for a K frame .357.

Not too hot, not too mild and I figured 1100fps from a 3" barrel, but without a chrono, who knows?

If you ever feel like trying that load and running it across your chrono, please let me know what it does.

Using my Ruger 4.2" GP-100 8 gr of Unique under a Lyman 358156GC averaged 1201fps over my F1 Chrony if that helps.

I used to be able to say that I had no use for a 357, but that 5" M60 sure makes it hard to say now. Hope I don't see one in person because I believe I might fall weak and have to have it

It really is about the best walkabout revolver I've ever laid my powder-residue laden hands on. I'll be making a new set of grips for mine sometime this summer. The Hogues feel nice, but are just a touch small for me.

As someone who has killed three chronographs (so far) I have to say...
It is worth it. The value of the data you can get from one is well worth the money spent....

A chrono can be very educational. I am glad you got one and I am sure you will get a lot more use from it in the future.

I just ordered an SDM fiber optic front sight, white outline rear, and a Wilson spring kit. The red ramp is really an awful front sight, and a flat black rear blade is rough, too. I can't wait to get it all dolled up and see how much better it handles and shoots.

GaryM, the little bit I have played with has shown me quite a bit. I look forward to putting some rifle rounds across the screens this summer to see just where my best loads fall.
