    first 45-70 kill

    with a cast boolit
I have been experimenting with a penta hp in a 410 gr 45-70 boolit
real dry season it opened this past Sat.11/19 and this is the first deer i have seen
anyway bout 20 min before dark and the ol tail twitch gave her away rite around 50 or so yds and a Texas heart shot
destroyed the left front leg like a cannon ball...... hit her brisket, thru her,and exited
knee joint ..amazing as they are still ran another 80-90 yds
no pics cause I forgot camera but needless to say with a perfect broadside shot I do believe I have found my thin skinned game boolit
they alloy was isolead with added tin for malleability

Interesting that it made it that far with a boolit placed like that, must have been a real mess. What sort of rifle? Iron sights or Scope? Good shot either way.

That is the Danger with all Wild Game. They do not know they are done till they are.

I have shot Deer with my 45-70 with a 350Gr Ranch Dog Boolit at near 2000FPS at 125 yards and have them drop on the spot and also had them run 50 or so yards with a Heart Lung shot. The Same with Hogs.

well got another doe this evening
gave up hunting my own land.....not seeing any deer
raining all day today so I went out in the afternoon only
I settled in at a spot about 3:00p.m. and was sitting in the rain wondering what the heck I was doing sitting in the rain when from out of no where comes a deer ....rite in front of me 20 yds tops....I had my rifle across my lap as to keep the rain off the scope and deer were so close and looking rite at me I had no time to get my pistol out so at 10 yds I blast the lead doe (2 Doe)and can see immediate red spot where I shot
a perfect lung shot slightly angling downward
the booilt entered just sightly off center lung and exited just behind the opposite shoulder
the blood trail was as though someone had brushed blood down the trail
so easy a caveman could follow
I found pieces of lung in some brush at the impact site and the deer went probably 40 yds
looks as though the boolit expanded and shed the nose there was a 45 cal hole in but the inside was 3-4" and a 45 cal exit
so far its working fine but only two kills so there is more to evaluate

Very good job. There is always more to learn though, like you said. Good thing about 45-70's is they really dont need to expand. Very reliable.
I came into this world kicking, screaming, and covered in someone elses blood. I plan to go out the same way.

Hmmm. Sounds like a great job, but I'm chewing on the "added tin for malleability"

I can't think of anything more malleable than pure lead. I don't think you add anything
but a touch of hardness and better mold fill out with the tin.

Either way - sounds like it did an excellent job for the assigned task.

    Well done!

Running 80 yds then dying is a pretty clean kill. If you think about it, that probably took 20 secs. Most of the time, the deer that are DRT or bang/flop are hit in or near the spine (or in the shoulder near where the spinal column runs) these drop no matter what cal you are using. T-Bird

I shot a nice doe up here in Alberta Canada with a home cast 405 RN FP and 48.5 grains of varget. Shot was 60 yards through both shoulders and she went 30-40 yards and blood trail similar to what you describe. This caliber seems to just keep on impressing me. Way to go on the 2 deer.
