    Lyman 358429BW mold

I have a Lyman 358429BW mold that is set up for hollow point but I do not have the pin/handle that goes thru the hole to make the hollow point. Has anyone made there own makeshift pin/handle and if so is it worth it for a single cavity mold.

It is pretty common for the hollow point pin to get misplaced from molds; especially from estate sales when the kids are selling all of Dad's or Grandpa's "nasty old gun stuff".

A pin for a Lyman mold isn't that hard to make up if you have access to a lathe, they can even be made with the poor man's version- an elctric drill and a file. I would start with making a pit for the cavity about the length of the nose, (at a wild guess) do some testing and go from there. I believe the standar weight was supposed to be 160 grains, or thereabouts.

If you don't want to attempt this yourself, there are several people here that could help you.

If yoiu decide not to try, and want to sell the mold instead, shoot me a PM I wouldn't mind having a 358429 HP mold.

I thought about cutting off the right size drill bit for the pin hole and putting a taper on the end to make the hollow point as a starter. Then I could worry about what to make the handle for the pin out of later.

Buckshot does these. Send him a PM to inquire.

Buckshot made 1 for me , topshelf work & service !!

& yes !!, a 1 holer is simpler to work with even if slower ,especially in hp molds .

I have a NOE 2 cavity & casting with it is a pleasure when both boolits start dropping off the pins , but until then it`s almost frustrating .

Ditto on Buckshot. Good work, good prices, quick response.

+ 1 for Buckshot. If you want to try this yourself the proper pin diameter for a 358439 was .155". Yours should be close to that.

Here are two examples of work by Buckshot.

Buckshot is top notch, Erik at Hollowpoint Services does very good work, too.

I have used brass rod in a drill and a hand file in the past. Will never do that again as long as Buckshot is willing to do the work.

    lead-1,

When casting with a Lyman style HP mold, it has worked better for me to twist and pull the pin before cutting the sprue (keeps the boolit from spinning in the blocks). Keeping a relatively fast pace so your pin stays hot helps a bunch too.

    Jerry,

How much do your 358627 HPs weigh? I have thought about having mine done, just haven't done it yet.

That is some fine looking work from Buckshot, I may just have to go that route.
I haven't done anything with the mold yet except wipe it off, it did come with the bonus boolit already in it with a 1/8th x 1/8th inch hollow point. I don't know what alloy the boolit is but it weighs 169 grains.
Here is the mold in question.

Another option would be to contact Erik at Hollow Point Bullet Mold Service: http://www.hollowpointmold.com/

Many members have used his services, with excellent results.
