    How much expading?

Hey Boolit guys, just wondering how much you would expand the neck on a 30 30 casing using the Lee universal expander?
Using Lee 150,113 and 180 moulds and applying gas checks.
All projectiles put through a Lee .309 sizer.
Also do you need to lube the boolit agian after it has been through the sizer before final loading.
    thanks for your input

The case mouth should be expanded the minimum amount that will allow the boolit gas check or base if it is plain based to just rest in the mouth entrance so the flair is on the outside of the diameter of the bullet at its edge.

Sounds complicated but the importance of doing it right is so the mouth is open wide enough to allow the bullet to enter without shaving. Excessive flaring will shorten case life too as removing the flair and crimping works the brass and makes it brittle so it will split prematurely if you over work it repeatedly and don't anneal it .

Just flair your case mouth the very minimum that will allow you to start bullets and no more. My flaring rarely measures more than a .005" outside mouth diameter larger after flair, compared to before flair. with 30-30 loading.

In fact I usually set up the case mouth flair die by measuring the sized case mouth first and then setting the flair die to expand the case mouth .004 and check bullet seating . It is so little you really cant see it but you can feel it with a finger nail where it bells out.

Thanks Gary, have set up flare so gas check just sits in case mouth.
    cheers john
