    More H&G #68 Boolits!

Got a little more casting done over the holiday.
    196lbs of boolits.
    6,700 of em.
The boolits in the coffee can are cast from wheel weights and weight 203grs.
The two crates contain boolits cast from range scrap, about 20:1 mix and weigh 205grs.
Got another 150lbs to cast before turning to the rifle boolits ...

Sorry it is blurry. It looks like I had smudges on the camera lense.

    Naw, used a four banger.
I am in on the group buy for the Mihec brass version and I cannot wait to get it. Am reserving a crate for bullets from that mould when it gets here!

Just out of curiousity, how long does a supply of 6,700 boolits last you?

When I was shooting "normally" on the weekends just three years ago, a .30 caliber ammo can held about ~650 to 700 rounds of .45ACP loaded with the Hensley & Gibbs #68.

I shot one can per shooting session. I use ten 10 round Chip McCormick Magazines. Roughly six to seven mag loading sessions and the can was empty.

The targets were several plate racks with 8 to 9 plates each. One full run though all the plate racks required at least 60 rounds of ammunition with zero misses.

    So...for me....6000 H&G 68's would last about 8 weekends or 2 to 2 1/2 months.

Which seems about right. I had to load a can a week to stay even.

I was able to maintain this pace for about 5 years and then life took over.

6000 can either be a two month supply or a 10 year supply depending on individual shooting needs.

One of my buds has a Class 3 Mac 10 in .45ACP. With 20 mags, a .30 can would be empty in no time at all.

It was simply mind boggling how much ammo we could go though if someone had both the Mac 10 and a Thompson running at the same time.

Texasflyboy, I am not in your league!
But I do a fair amount of shooting. These bullets will be shot up in about 5 months.
Now, if my interest shift and I shoot less 45acp and more of something else then they will last longer. Right now I am shooting three nights a week with the 45s and when the weather gets good again, that will increase another two days a week due to weekend matches so they will go pretty quickly if I keep on keepin' on.

That is a mighty fine pile of boolits, lawboy! It makes me want to break out my 6-cavity Mihec H&G 68 and get casting. I too am in on the 4 cavity brass version by Mihec, and I cannot wait to get my hands on that mold!

I went to buy myself one or two Mihec molds for Santa to put in my stocking but everything is out of stock.
Does this operation only make molds on orders?

That is an impressive pile of 68's from a four cavity mould! How do you keep the mould cool?

I have eight cavity and four cavity H&G moulds in that style modified to drop 185 grains and use two RCBS 10 Kilo pots and would be happy with that pile.

I run the 185 grain moulds and an eight cavity H&G 200 grain mould at the same time.

We put 300 rounds of the 68's thru a Reising Mod 50 one day with nary a bobble.
How's that hope and change working for you?

You are a busy fella aren't you. If I was shooting as many as you are I would be very concerned about getting all my lead back. It's kind of a vicious cycle with me. Cast, load, fire, scrounge for brass, scrounge for lead, cast, load....

Funny thing is, I don't. I have two stars and three Lyman 450s and I have hardly ever used the stars! I just tend to gravitate to the 450s but I suppose I should start using the stars. One is set up for the 68s and the other is set up for the 358429 style bullets. I have a few other dies and top punches for them but for some reason they just do not appeal to me that much. They are faster, true enough but somehow I do not seem to care about that. I ain't sellin though as they look good bolted to my lube sizing bench!

Keeping the mould cool can be an issue but once it is up and running balancing the melt temp seems to do it. Someone here on my other thread gave me a great trick I have been using. Keep a wet towel on the bench and every few throws, tamp the blocks on it. Very effective way to manage the block temp.

Getting the lead back ... no problem. I take about 130lbs of scrap from the indoor range trap every week. Usually renders about 80-100lbs of ingots. I sell a lot of lead. Funds the other stuff like primers, powder, match fees, hotel rooms, etc. during the traveling match season.

My fun with H&G Moulds...it's all YOUR fault!

    Tom:
55S 10 cavity in 380. Shoot them from a MAC M11A1 380 buzz gun. 9mm 6 cavity (that I traded with you) shoot in a S&W76, MAC9mm, UZI subguns and pistols, 45 in #68 in UZI. Than God for Hensley & Gibbs moulds, Star sizers and Dillon 550's.
That doesn't even count the M16!

Gerry, Miha makes molds to group buy orders. He makes a few extra that he sells on his site, but they tend to go fast. If you want a mold get involved in or start a group buy.
