    Got battered by slugs today

Well, I got a new moosberg smoothbore slug barrel and decided to sight it in today. So after reading good things about win super x rifled slugs i decided to give them a try. WOW do these things kick. I shot 20 of them over the course of 2 hours and I must be getting wimpy in my old age because my shoulder is sore!

I also tested my first cast slugs that I must admit were not well put together but the best ones were on the paper.

    Heres the load.

    35 grains HS6
    winaa12 wad
    2 3/4 inch already primed hulls ( i don't remember the name)
    lee 7/8 slug

This load had significantly lower recoil than the super x's

i also loded sum with 32 grains and they did not shoot well.

i'm going to do another batch, this time I will load some at 35 grains and some at 38 grains of HS6.

    If shooting off a bench
Stand a 1/2 full 25 lb bag of shot up between your shoulder and the butt stock

Takes most of the recoil out of bench shooting slugs

Those Super X will rock your world. I shoot slugs off a sissy rest (not a lead sled, but think lead sled without the lead) and don't feel one bit ashamed.
I only fired one this year, a sighter that broke the bull at 100 yards, then went hunting, course it was a known load that has seen several cut down range.

A few year's ago a friend and I bought a several box's of 3" magnum turkey loads for pattern test's. After we were done I felt like my shoulder had been run over by truck and punch on side of my head. Another buddy has a lead sled which make's sighting in slug's pleasant. FB

I shot 5 of those winchester super X slugs from my "new to me" '67 remington 870 fieldmaster riot shotgun. Mind you I pretty much never shoot a shotgun. I decided to shoot them from prone at 50yards to see if I was even close.

Don't feel bad. Its not about old age. I'm in my early 30's and it rocked my world. That is some recoil!

On a side not the accuracy was amazing for slugs. 3 of them were touching from 50 yards.

I picked up a somewhat neglected Remington 1100 over a year ago that had the old smoothbore rifle sighted slug barrel on it . And later I acquirred a Remington 870 in the same configuration .

The 1100 with the open sights from the bench will put 5 shots in a ragged hole at 50 yards . Now bear in mind that whole is about 2" in diameter and thats with the Winchester 2 3/4" 1 ounce Foster Slugs of which you speak .

The old 870 would do almost as well .

While the 1100 with this load is a bit stout I don't find it hard to handle . The 870 on the other hand was a bit much . Incidently both these guns have good recoil pads . Oh yeah the 870 didn't hang around to long , I had a friend that wanted it at a few dollars profit so who was I to say no

I use 37gr of HS6 under 1 oz slugs and the recoil is way better than factory slugs.
Getting about 1200fps from a 18.5" barrel Mossberg Maverick 88.
Do weigh your slugs 'cause I heard the 7/8 sometimes weigh 1 oz

    Good afternoon
When I am testing RB loads I generally shoot off cross sticks. I am a whole 155 pounds and sitting upright behind those thumpers helps alot.
