hold onto something b4 u click this thread

so i finally got out of the house to do some testing.. my friend daywalker gave me some of his new bullets to test, they are 215 grain .45 cal. bullets . i loaded them with 5.4 grains of bullseye into some 45 acp and went testing... avg mv was 860 fps and they went 4 inches into balistic wax (same as 8 inches into gel)... what i found after cutting wax open was amazing......enjoy... ...bill

    That is freaking amazing

Were those .40 cases swaged up to .45?

So, they would stop on a breast bone, and be able to be removed conveniently. I would not recommend this for a defensive bullet.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

maybe,, but at 860 fps with a weight of 215 gr. u do the math on the ft. lbs of energy that breastbone would have to take one hell of a thump !!!! and some of us shoot better than to have to aim for the chest face is plenty soft, brain soup anyone ??

Was that bullet made with pure lead or wheelweights?
    Nice expansion no matter what.

You guys seemed pretty thrilled with the results from these "funny looking" bullets back in April. What happend since then to sour your opinion about the performance of these bullets?

    Looks pretty impessive to me.

BT, I find this on nearly every forum I am on. Most of us do reloading as a hobby and to me it is something to pass time. Some people just take life too seriously.

Now after seeing these boolits you need to make me a 275 gr. .338 boolit that will expand like this at 1000fps.

I assume these figures are in a 45acp, probably totally adequate in their intended purpose. If not, there are plenty of specialty bullets available commercially at added cost.

I also suspect they would yield at least a couple more foot-pounds out of a 45 colt or a 44 magnum in a hunting situation.

Plenty effective for my use, YMMV.
    The price is right too!

nothing has happened since this was posted. they did perform well, i thought so! but they were and still are funny looking imho.. and if i said something about there performance being bad, i dont remember, only problem i saw was a powder space issue..with slower burning powders..and it still usses up one of the main components of reloading...casses.!!!

    Bill,
I hear what you are saying about the cases. I bought my first thousand at a fairly reasonable price, or so I thought at the time. I have since become part of a range/club, a couple dozen LE types shooting the 40's by the boxfulls. No-one there reloads the 40's (they are provided a regular alotment of practice ammo) so they were selling the spent brass to a scrap yard by weight. Needless to say the last several thousand came a bunch cheaper than the first!

Powder space is sometimes a problem in the smaller acp cases and with slower burning powders, but in my 45 colt and 44's, there is plenty of space to spare - if it ever becomes a problem, I'll trim off rims, but I don't see that needing to be done.

I view the using of cases in light of saving them from the scrap-yard, re-purposing them much the same way we re-purpose all those pesky wheel weights, melting them down to make bullets or cores. (I have my own hobby car/tire shop and still keep the prettiest wheel weights sorted by weight in the balancer tray.)

I'd really like to learn more about using brass and copper tubing for jackets - it's my next quest.

Your dies look pretty impressive - is/are there any threads that would help me/us learn more about them? For now, I'm off to the search engine.
    Thanks,
    Bob
