    Aa 8700 / h 870

I have been using AA 8700 with excelent success in wy old 1895 Winchester 38-72 1886 40-82 and my 43 spanish rolling block. All with mag primers. Now AA 8700 is no longr made. But H 870 is available on surpluss ect. Anyone ever ran it as a low pressure powder in smaller cases? Thanks Paul

I have been running wcc860 which I believe to be slightly faster than H870. It is slightly easier to ignite than concrete but does well enough with mag primers and a couple of grains of 4227 held against the primer. I've been burning through 48lbs of it I bought when it was $20 a jug and it does well as a reduced pressure powder so I expect you'll do fine with it. In the 300 Mags, it can get too hot, but in medium capacity cases I suspect it will reach max volume long before you reach max pressure.

I shot WC870 against AA8700 and found them to be equivalent for all practical purposes.
I still had a few pounds of WC870 and someone gave me 8 lbs of AA8700

    That said, I shot both in 5.5X257, 8X57, 30-06.

Most is within average lot to lot variation and I would think starting charges could be used. As always, assume it is the fastest lot you've ever gotten a hold of and work up.
