    314299 in sks

I’m trying to load 314299 for my sks. My concern is how deep I have to seat them to feed in the magazine. Do I run a pressure risk having so much lead seated in the case?

Hang on a second and I will link some articles for you to read. Quite entertaining and informative!

BTW, Junior Doughty (Junior1942) has a couple of articles on using LeveRevolution in the SKS with heavies; look for the sticky concerning Mr. Gibson's work and load data compilation. Not 2400, I know, not certain I would use 2400 in the SKS with heavies. Need more research!

Now for a direct answer to your question; I do indeed shoot 316299's from my Yugo SKS just fine using LeveRevolution. I seat the boolits to clear the front of the magazine (TAPCO) without any issues. I will try to find my data, hold on.

1.4 to 1.7 cc's of LeveRevolution in my Yugo SKS is the ticket using NOE 316299's; I powder coat some and use 45-45-10 on others. Figure out what works best in YOUR rifle, and have some fun!

What is the weight in grains of the 314299? I could run upstairs to my library, but chose not to. LOL. I cast the Lyman #311410 130 grain plain base boolit in my SKSs.

    Be well.

Adam, weight is 205 grains, +/-. The 9 1/2 inch twist of the SKS is beneficial to the 'heavy for caliber' boolit.

I use a 195gn boolit in my JW105 Norinko (bolt action) with 23.5gn of 3031.

I am pretty certain that LeveRevolution is repackaged Reloder 12 because the burn rates are practically identical. That being said, what other powders would be suitable for heavies in the SKS? What about other cartridges?

LeveRevolution powder is not repackaged RL12. LeveRevolution is a special blend of powders to achieve the unique pressure curves it produces. Frankly, attempting to correlate it to RL12 based on burn rate chart positions is a fool's errand and inherently unsafe to do so.

Mr. Gibson, not intending to state a fact, just an opinion based on charts. I do stand corrected, sir.

Years ago, when I had my FFL, I purchased a NIB Type 56 SKS from Navy Arms. After I slugged the bore, I had Veral Smith (LBT) make a copy of the C.E. Harris designed bullet to fit that rifle. Accuracy was quite good with it, but some time later I got the idea to try Ly. #314299 in that rifle since -299 could be sized to fit the bore. With 13 - 14gr. Hercules/Alliant 2400, it was more accurate than I expected. Btw, in that SKS, the magic "size to" diameter was .314". The one I have now has a larger bore, but is even more accurate with a heavier, C. E. Harris designed CB. In the accompanying photo, the heavier Harris CB is on the right.

What mold#? What's the weights of those two and what about the one on the left?

My Russian SKS has a .312 groove diameter and my Mini MK X has a .311 Groove diameter. I've found the NOE 310-165-FN 30 XCB left as cast at .311+ and just GC seated and lubed in a .312 H&I die work very well in both rifles. I load the XCBs over 25 gr of IMR 4895. I had hoped the 314299s would work in the Mini MkX as I would have loaded some to test over 27.5 gr of LeveRevolution powder. Based on my testing with Junior1942s 197 gr bullets that load should push the 314299s out at 1800+ fps. But, alas, the 314299s are just too long for the Mini Mk Xs action......

The 311/314299 cast bullets are too long when seated with the GC at the base of the 7.62x39 neck. While they wok/function fine in the SKS they will chamber correctly in the Mini Mk X but a live round, if not fired, is too long to be ejected. It requires pulling the bolt out while holding the bolt stop/ejector all the way out and that is a pain.

I would LOVE to have Junior's thread on this subject resurrected and made a 'Sticky'. I have requested this before. Yes, we have a 'sticky' concerning the 'practical dope', but Juniors work is worthy of its' own.
