    TC .54 Maxiball Load

I cast some .54 Maxiballs for my TC New Englander.

What is the load of FFg for this boolit?

    Thanks,

I started with 60gr of FFG, real black and went up from there.

I think I settled on 80gr for an accurate load.

    80 to 90 grs FFG -- awesome.

100 FFG, round ball -- outstanding

Question What ball size for TC .54 Hawken?

A nice older Thompson Center Hawken in .54 cal followed me home today. I was wondering what round ball size/ patch thickness they seem to like. Anybody have a favorite black powder load? Thanks, Jeff

Best advice for the OP is to cast up a bagfull of Maxis & head to the range. Start with 60gr & fire 3 shot strings. Then up the charge 5gr & fire 3 shots with that charge. keep doing this till you see your groups tighten up. You will reach a point where your groups start to open up. At this point stop. back off 5gr & you have your optimum load.. I've done this with 5 different rifles & it's worked very well for me with conicals or patched ball.

Tinsmith, My 54 T/C Firehawk likes a .530ball and a .015 patch with 90gr FFg BLACK. Not Pyrodex or 777. But the above advice works for patched ball also. Plus it gives you the excuse to go shoot black powder all day!

    Kuato,
Thanks for the advice! I'll give .530's with .015 patching a try. I'm used to shooting a .36 percussion. The .54 @ 90 grains FFg will definately let me know when she fires. I'll start at 60 and work up as you suggested.

I used to use 80gr 2F Goex. That load shot minute of deer and was tolerable to practice with in a TC Renegade. The max load was supposed to be 120 and I might have tried that but pain really isn't my bag. Very many of the 80gr loads got to my cheek in pretty short order. I never had much luck with RBs in mine. Sure didn't feel comfortable enough to hunt with them.
