    Fallow deer Yesterday

Was out shooting a few rabbits with 223 and cast bullets with some of Jeff in NZs free checks, when a young fallow buck came out ot the scrub. Took the shot at approx 50yards broadside just behind near shoulder and thru lungs exited the other side. The load was CBE 225-42 gc from ww and 7.5 gns unique. At the shot the deer walked about 10 yards and collapsed. The picture on left is entry about halfway up. Middle picture is exit. picture on right is the hole thru the lungs which is one & a half inches in diameter.

How much did that deer weigh? I have killed a couple whitetail does with .22 hornet. But I'm guessing your load was a bit lighter than the one I used. I was not sure of penetration ability so they got it behind the ear at 25 yards.

Thats intersting. I have wondered how effective a 22 cast boolit would be on medium sized game. Now I know.

What does that load do to rabbits?

Fire up the barby and bring out the beer! That's mighty impressive for a 223 with cast boolits!

It comes down to boolit placement and confidence in your firearm and skills. The 200+ kilo Red Deer I shot several months back, dropped on the spot with a single shot from a AIA M10 in 7.62 x 39mm 125gr JSP which did not exit.

So Euan firted out the Barbie-Q and drinks all round.

We had a few of these species in California, exotics that got loose from game farms or just hung around after the businesses folded when civilization encroached. The Fallow deer was kinda robustly built for a small critter, and one that I shot with a 357 Magnum revolver went about 50 yards before piling up. The 158 grain JHP went through and through with a wound track similar to your deer's result. Yes, he was VERY tasty--he made a living on alfalfa and barley grown locally, and resembled marbled beef fattened with corn "on the hook". Alas, that sort of sport left 20 years ago when the subdivisions continued their encroachments and the coyotes finished off the exotics.
I don't paint bullets. I like Black Rifle Coffee. Sacred cows are always fair game. California is to the United States what Syria is to Russia and North Korea is to China/South Korea/Japan--a Hermit Kingdom detached from the real world and led by delusional maniacs, an economic and social basket case sustained by "foreign" aid so as to not lose military bases.

Greg; from what I read the mold was one of Jim ALLISON's from CBE (Cast Bullet Engineering) here down under. Jim does make some good molds.

Nah, I'm built like a rake. He wouldn't fit in them.

Ah, it's a beautiful thing. Purple long johns and a wallaby scrotum. What more could a man want.

Greetings from Peru... I am impressed ! There are few critters walking the mountain sides here. Most are protected due to removal by the Spanish 400+ years ago.
Barby ribs and backstrap sounds GREAT right now !

    Giday Guys,
been away from modern coms for a 3 weeks, so will answer questions.
Gregg; The mould is one of Jim Allisons of Cast Bullet Engineering, Australia. Of which I have about dozen of his moulds. I realy do like them. And made fairly local, Brothers across the tasman Ditch.

Carpetman: they wern't Jeffs bullets, but were was one of his freechecks he sent me to try.
also I havn't tied his purple longjohns, as im more brick built and would surely hate to stretch them out of shape.

Jeff in NZ; Cool scotum, you right about the rake.
    cheers Euan.

In 196? I purchased a Savage 99 take down and 100 rounds of 22 hi power ammo from an old logger in N Wisconsin. most of the cartridges were cast boolits. Some of them are so old they use small rifle primers. Carl could talk all day about the many deer he shot both for his subsistence and to help hunters that stayed at his place during hunting season. Shot placement was the key to his success. Some day I may use a couple rounds to see the powder and speed of his loads. Yes the venison was good.
