Lyman 429421

Last Saturday I went to the LGS to buy a few bore brushes.
On a side table they had some used molds so I asked to take a look at one of them.

GS owner handed me the one I wanted and said "50 bucks". I was about to inspect it when he came back again and tells me "OK, 35 bucks and its yours".

I couldn´t pass at that price so it came home with me.

Lyman #429421 with very little wear.

Any idea on how old it might be? Seems to be older than the other ones I have: it came in a grey cardboard box with hand written numbers. All the other ones I have have came in orange plastic boxes.

I ´ll try to develop some .44 spl. target loads for this one. Any starting ideas? I have both Unique and Bullseye on hand.

Congratulations, that's the "go to" bullet design for many 44 mag enthusiasts. The box design suggests a birthday in the '70s or '80s, and the price of $35 was a bargain! Ya dun good.

PS If you look on the back of the brochure that came with it, you will probably find a production and date code down at the bottom. With something like 84-10M, which means 10 thousand of these were printed in 1984.

I use 7 gr. of Unique with that in 44 Special.

5 grains of Bullseye in the .44 Special for 750 fps, 7.2 grains of Bullseye in the .44 Magnum for 1000 fps.

I have a 429421 mold bought new in 73. came in that box. I ordered mine in hollow point with gas check. 22gr. 2400 under that bullet in a .44 mag.case anything hit does not get back up.

I am currently experimenting with that bullet and 231. 7, 8 and 9 gr of 231. I have loaded 100 of each and let's see how they work.
I shoot them in my 1956 S&W 5 screw pre 29 6". It is like shooting butter.
I have to say they really made them right in '56. These were essentially hand built guns. Before you get your undies in a knot and complain about shooting a collector's gun, I bought the gun 15 years ago in 99+% condition with no case and no tools, and not even the original grips. I bought it to shoot and I have shot many 429421's out of it. Light loads.
But Lordie what a shooter!

I have a model 29 that was a commemorative model for the SC Wildlife and Marine Resources Dept. with engraving made in 1980.... it is only worth about the same as the regular ones.... so I shoot it... and it shoots GOOD ! I feel the same, shoot em.
