I want to bring the thread back around to part of my original line of questioning although many other good points have been made. A part of the OP pertained to paper thickness and bullet diameter....
Forum: Smokeless Paper Patching
Update;
Part of my original post was concerning Buffalo Arms 9lb Onion Skin paper that was purchased because it was clearly advertised as being .002" thick. The paper I received measured .0015"...
Forum: Smokeless Paper Patching
That's a good idea. I considered that before I ordered the paper from Buff Arms. I just figured that when I paid for .002" paper that is what I would get instead of .0015", a full 25% thinner. I...
Forum: Smokeless Paper Patching
I probably need to ask Buffalo Arms first. I was just curious if anyone else here had encountered the same problem with Buff Arms 9lb Onion Skin.
Forum: Smokeless Paper Patching
I will be trying both black and smokeless (as well as duplex loads). I will be patching to groove for smokeless and to bore for black.
Forum: Smokeless Paper Patching
I understood from Matthews book, "The Paper Jacket" that the bullet size was determined by bore and groove diameters and the paper thickness was the variable. He says for smokeless to size the bullet...
Forum: Smokeless Paper Patching
I picked up a nice Pedersoli .45-70 Silhouette earlier this year and thought I'd try PP. That's probably as close to Quigley's rifle that I'll ever own. I already owned an 1871 H&R Buffalo Classic...
Forum: Boolit Lube !
Does this mixture work OK as a pan lube so I could try a small batch before committing to a sizer full of it?
Would the Modified Emmerts have any benefits over this mixture? I sure like the...
Forum: Boolit Lube !
Contrary to the title of this thread I am not looking for the one "best" lube of all available lubes for my Trapdoors. That question, probably responsible for many flame wars, is closely akin to...
Forum: Muzzleloading.
Did you bore the Renegade barrel yourself or have it done? Is it a 1" octagon or a roundy barrel? I have one that I considered smoothing. Course, it may be better to just buy a fowler or trade gun...

That information is exactly what I needed but I didn't know how to find it or even that it existed.

I'm strongly considering purchasing a high quality v-anvil mic for measuring chamber casts and pound casts from the three groove rifling in my TDs. That tool looks like it would measure boolit...
Forum: Lead and Lead Alloys
I saw that but don't have Office loaded yet so figured I couldn't use the spreadsheet.

1:16 is specified for Trapdoor Springfield boolits.
Forum: Lead and Lead Alloys
I have several pounds of 1:20 alloy (as well as 1:30) but need some 1:16. I plan to order some 1:16 soon but can I make 1:16 from 1:20 simply by adding a few percent of tin to the 1:20 (or 1:30)?
Forum: Lead and Lead Alloys
That is very interesting. I considered that but assumed PP wouldn't work too good with the short throat in Trapdoors. What kind of accuracy did you get and at what range? Did you patch to bore or...
Forum: Lead and Lead Alloys
I know with most loads in this cartridge that is usually the case but I understand that loads in these Trapdoors are supposed to do better when crimped. Could that be due to a need for the pressure...
Forum: Lead and Lead Alloys
I have both Lee moulds that Spence had them to manufacture according to his research. One is a ~420gr hollow-base and the other is a flat base 500gr, both with round noses. They both drop boolits at...
Forum: Lead and Lead Alloys
When I turned the hollowing pin for my Accurate 46-210 mold I turned it to make the skirt thickness about .100", way thicker than they appeared in the pics of the Rapine 460210 which you posted....
Forum: Lead and Lead Alloys
On page 145 in his excellent book, "Loading Cartridges for the Original .45-70 Springfield Rifle and Carbine" (3d Edition), Spence Wolf says to cast a 460210 Rapine bullet from 80:1 alloy to use in a...
Forum: Cast Boolits
Lol. I was wondering the same just this morning even before I read your post. I think it would have to be resized a bit too much to fit the .45acp since this boolit drops from the mold at .460". I...
Forum: Cast Boolits
You probably are correct. This not an old, used mold (which might cast larger) but is a brand new mold. I can't remember where I purchased it (likely Evilbay) but that should not matter to Lyman. It...
Forum: Cast Boolits
Interesting.
I have a bunch of Lyman molds for different calibers, especially .45acp, 9mm, .30cal, and .45-70. Most of them cast as advertised. That's part of the reason why this 457130 mold casting...
Forum: Cast Boolits
I am not opposed to PCing and even have everything to do it as I considered doing it for some .45acp boolits. However, I'd really like to figure out if I am doing something wrong or if I just need to...

Both alloys were poured from a small batch of alloy so I used a gas heated pot and kept the temp about 700-750F.
Both alloys were ladle-poured.
