After the 308w testing it got me wondering about pistol/revolver ammo and pc'd bullets. Decided to use a beater s&w 629 as a test bed. Bought that 629 years ago at a gunshow and it spent it's life...
Forum: Coatings and Alternatives
Several years ago I was playing around with a 308w using the lee 160gr tl bullet. I cast a pile of them using a 14bhn alloy and used a home made al gas check on them. 1/2 of them I traditionally...

That's actually called a clue.
A link well worth reading.

When efficiency increases (higher velocities) that's telling you you're load is...

Ya, happening on most of the websites anymore including this 1.
Weeeelllllll there's glass then there's a well glass. People hear glass put in a context with other barriers like wood/walls/etc. and think window or door glass.
Glass like what windshields are...
Lifes full of tradeoffs. What you choose for a sd load for your bulldog is no different. I've carried a bulldog since the 80's and still do to this day. Did a lot of testing over the years with...

Wow!!!
Never thought about it having an endless supply at the local recycle center. They have areas/bins for cardboard, glass, cans, etc. Any time I want to do testing it's nothing to go to the...

I prefer to use wetpack for testing penetration/expansion. I tape newspapers together making 8"/9"/10" bundles. They get put (4 or 5 bundles) into a 48qt cooler and then the cooler is filled with...
IMHO:
You should do testing with multiple bullets & powders. There's a fine lie between performance/accuracy/controllability.
A couple years back I did head-to-head testing using full house loads...
Been using redots and scopes on handguns for 30+ years now. When my eyes started changing (old age/40) it was time to start using redodts to stay competitive.
Started out with a 617-1 and a...
Not much help with quick loads.
I started doing this back in the 1980's and still do the same thing to this day. Take a "known" powder/load of a powder with a similar (faster is better) and use...
Yup, that's why it's good to test and retest all chambers in the cylinders. Then make a decision (if need be) to do something about it or not.
I have a beater s&w 629 with 1 bad chamber in the...
You're going to luv that bullet and the quality of the mold casting them. I only shoot the 1911's @ 50ft anymore. Not hand/cherry picked by any means. Nothing more then the test target used to test...

From your 1st post:
"I have heard in the past as long as you don't load to high velocities it won't gas cut."
Interesting:
That 11.5gr load of unique I posted is about max for the 44mag. Lyman...
Forum: Cast Boolits
Velocity has nothing to do with. It's all about the load/pressure.
The majority of my casting/shooting (90%+ since the 1980's) needs is done with 8/9bhn range scrap. Playing around shooting 8/9bhn...
Last thing I'd want is a 38spl for sd/ccw.
Last thing I'd want to use in a snub-nosed 357mag is a 125gr hp.
The ca bulldog is one heck of a hard hitting light weight revolver. This revolver has...
Interesting to say the least.
Contrary to popular belief you don't need to be an expert/master class shooter to tell the difference between a mold that cast multiple diameter bullets and a quality...

I cast a bunch of different bullets for the 38spl/357mag. Here's some of them that I cast.

I do head to head testing with them all the time. Different...
Erosion can occur were the brass ends in the cylinders. Hot powders will have more of an impact. Hot powders ='s h110, mp-300, 2400, aa#9, etc.
Not the best picture, what a 586 cylinder looked...

90% + of my casting/shooting needs is done with range scrap from an outdoor range. Everything goes into the pot and #100 bathes come out 8/9bhn. I like to run the rc alloy hot (725* using a pid...
A swc is what's known as a semi-wad-cutter. A couple different hp swc's I cast for the 38spl's/357 mag's. All of them have a shoulder/sharp front edge on the front of the top drive band....
Forum: Lead and Lead Alloys
Impressive as usual Gamsek!!!
As others have stated, it depends on the bullet & hp design. But when you do find an alloy that works, it will suit you well for 90%+ of your hp needs.
I can not...
It the later stages of wear it will not only affect accuracy. The velocities will fall off. Extreme cases will have lead spitting.
A picture of a s&w 586 bbl. It had already been sent back to s&w...
Not really, it's more of a waste of good powder. You need to get into a 4" bbl or longer to start to get the flash/bang you're talking about. Same goes for h110 & mp-300.
