I have an older S&W M&P in 38 special. The barrel has a ring of pitting about an inch down the tube from the forcing cone and accuracy is suffering. I contacted S&W's service center and they would be happy to sell me a new barrel, but they will not work on it since it was made prior to 1958. Can anyone suggest a good smithy to replace/swap out the barrel and have a rough idea what it would cost? Any input would be greatly appreciated. By the way, the revolver was made in 1949 according to S&W.

Thanks for the reply! I called them and they sounded very knowledgable and very reasonable. My old M&P may just get a new tube afterall.
What's the deal with 1958?
Or does this mean no one in the place is old enough to remember 1958?
The long explanation from the tech at S&W was that they really have no internal parts for S&W's made prior to 1958 left and that by their rule they just don't service anything made prior to 1958. He stated that they would often get older guns in and then once they took em' apart they discovered lots of broken internal parts that they just could not replace. He sounded pretty knowledgable and said that he had been working their 30+ years.
