If you had only one powder to buy (44 mag/spc)

Hey all
I am new to brass loading as in I have yet to cast and load my first Boolit
but as i was reading here and then went to look at whats around local for powder/ primers
NONE can be found not a one.... and the $25 bux for hazmat on the web hurts so started to think..
and as I wanted to load 44Mag and later .45Apc
I thought I better fine or start to find what i need now,
so question is
If you had only one powder to buy to load 44mag and or .45auto for target and paper poken
whAT Would it be?

my son and I hope to start to collect what we can along the way, but with the panic we might get bit in the A$$
if it stays like it is and i think its gona get worse before it gets beter

Harlan...I use Winchester 231 for 44 and 45,it last and does poke holes in paper.

I've been loading 7.4 grains of Unique behind that 44-200 RF that originated as a 44-40 bullet. It's been accurate out to 50 yards, so far. I hit a 3" round steel target at that range, twice! But, your gun may like more or less. The standard for 44 spl has long been 7 to 8 grains of Unique. It shoots soft enough that it seems pretty accurate regardless of the exact tenth grain you shoot with.

unique or power pistol will both work, but then so does black powder.

2400 is the only powder I buy for 44 Mag/Special 900-1500fps

Then you said 45apc which is a low pressure round not suitable for 2400.

Many will work, bullseye, red dot and unique to name a few. I have used all three in 44 mag and 45 acp. Unique would be my favorite of the three.

Unique. Winchester 231 is an excellent choice as well but Unique is extremely versatile. Win 231 is pretty clean even at slightly reduced loads. Loaded to .44 Special level it leaves the barrel of my .44 Mag (14" single shot) looking like it was just cleaned. I've never used in in .45 ACP but will next time I load some.

Unique for sure. 231 will work also, but I think Unique would be the better choice. JW

231 for all paper pokin' loads. 44 mag can be loaded up there but will not reach maximum velocities with 231. Go to 296 for magnum velocities.
I use 231 for 380, 9mm, 38, 357, 44 and 45, and shoot them in submachineguns too....well not 38,357 and 44 anyway. Mac 380 is such fun with cast and 231.
But just one powder? 231 hands down.

I hate having bunches of powder containers around. Therefore I buy 8 pounders on one powder for handguns. Unique is what I use for 44, 38 and 45 ACP.

I don't know if it's just me, but I'd use Unique since it's extremely well-suited to all three of those except for the most-hottest-fastest .44 Magnum, but it will get you plenty of pop in that one too.

Go ahead and buy 8lbs of it, it doesn't eat and will be scarce for a while. It works surprisingly well in just about anything that you can cram a cast boolit into.
