I have a Williams 5D and the original ramped front sight with bead on my 94. I want to change it out for a plain post front sight. Other than having a gunsmith cut a dovetail, whys my best option?

Buy a plain post front sight blade of the same height of the bead front sight blade, and do an R&R.
Andy at www.skinnersights.com will fix you up for about $15.

I have original Redfield Sourdough fronts on two of my leverguns. It is a partridge style sight with a small brass insert at the top of the blade. They turn up on EBay sometimes but go for a pretty penny. Skinner is the nicest sight of this type made today in my opinion and you can't beat the price.
My older eyes have gone to fiber optic front sights with no regrets.

Lyman 17 IIRC in my .32WS, Nice globe sight but may need to be fit to your dovetail.
