Can you add color to LLA by adding dye or food coloring without affecting performance

OK, just from a fun point of view, can you color liquid alox or the jpw/lla mixture?

I'm just thinking it would be a fun way to mark what the boolits are, for instance if you load different weight RN boolits for your .45, it might be cool if the green ones are 230gn and the red ones are 200gn or something like that.

Maybe when you are mixing upt he jpw/lla, just add a few drops of food coloring or dye or something? Or would it mess up the lube somehow?

I haven't tried it and have no plans in that direction but I believe you could color it any color you wanted - as long as it was dark brown.


Don't know about food coloring. It is water based. I don't think it would mix. I would try crayons.

People do that with other lubes I just dont think you would get any color to change the brown

Lee Liquid Earwax stays brown :) But it works really well.

I tried the food coloring it did not mix and not looks like old rotting guts some red, some brown, etc.

or darker brown.
water stuff don't work it just makes something you have to throw away.

I theorize that if you can cut the friction in half,

you can increase the velocity by about 1 + the square root of 2 times pi divided by the barrel length.

Now that all the joking is done, go to your friendly neighborhood arts and crafts store (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc) and get some candle dye from that section. I use the stuff that comes in little blocks and find that a very small amount of the dye will give good color to my beeswax and lanolin based lubes. Since you're starting with a darker mix in the LLA, you'll get dark red, and dark blue and dark green, etc. Some folks use their kids' crayons for the same purpose, but I'm a bachelor, and I like more pigment with less "carrier." ;)
