Winchester 1873 loading issue

I have a Uberti 1873. After I cleaned my rifle I went to the range, my cartridge jammed on first attempted shot. After removing cartridge, I found that the action worked perfectly until I loaded a cartridge. The cartridge wouldn’t feed into the barrel more that 2/3 of the way. I thought it was the mechanism, but when I tried to feed the cartridge by hand with no mechanism connected, the cartridge stuck the same way. I inspected the barrel and could not see anything block it’s path. Any help would be most appreciated.

Sounds like you are feeding 44/40 into a 38/40 chamber!

Is this new ammo or reloaded? Is this the first time you have tried to shoot it or have you shot it before? What caliber is stamped on the barrel and the ammo(if the ammo is new)?

Also, did you have a case head separation and part of the brass is still stuck in the front of the chamber?

New rifle and factory ammo. Second time out. Same result with dummy ammo

Can’t really see. Will check again.

What does this say on the barrel?

Most likely cause, or something stuck in there after cleaning.

Get a small allen wrench, and a plier to hold it. Scrape it along the chamber wall and see it you "catch" anything. Mark the long leg of the allen wrench so you know when you have gone the full depth of the chamber.

Factory ammo. Also, used previously.

No separation. Same result with snap caps.

So back up. You used factory ammo and shot the gun and it loaded and fired as it should. You then simply cleaned the gun and now the same factory cartridges won't go into the chamber. The only possibility is there is something in the chamber blocking it from accepting a cartridge. Case head separation is possible but very unlikely from factory 357 ammo in a new gun. Only you can figure the problem as the gun is in your hands.
