$65 in 1894? Might be worth sending your “agent” to Roscoe to inquire about payment personally.
Ha! They wouldn’t draft that letter today for the 1/2 pound of powder, taxes and hazmat that would get you today. It would be fun to know what quantity of powder that would have gotten you back then. I’d guess several hundred pounds.
That's about $1400 of powder in today's money.
My guess would be a 50# keg.
Wow and to think some powder is being sold today at around $65 a pound.
Wow....! What a fascinating and historical document. Don't lose it! Hercules isn't around anymore, but I'll bet their successor company would love to have it to display in their office.

A bit of added history.... In the middle 1960s I was working as an armed guard at a defense sub-contractor's plant in Richmond, CA. The gardeners that kept the front of the buildings looking so nice were an interesting pair of old guys. One had been a minor league baseball pitcher, and the other was an immigrant from Portugal named Albano Bastos. During WW II he worked as an armed guard on the gunpowder dock in Hercules, CA. He was armed with a Colt Commando revolver.
